Reviewable life imprisonment for beating and kicking his ex-mother-in-law to death in Mallorca

The Jury Court of the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands has found a man guilty of murder who killed his ex-mother-in-law by kicking and beating her in Mallorca, a 74-year-old woman. The Jury has unanimously considered that the defendant is the author of a murder crime with cruelty and treachery, against a particularly vulnerable victim. The members of the Jury also recognize the aggravating factor of gender.

The man killed the mother of his former partner in the Colonia de Sant Jordi (Mallorca) in September 2024. The man was cruel to the woman, whom he repeatedly beat while she was on the ground. During the trial, his ex-partner recounted the terror to which mother and daughter were subjected, who even slept together with their shoes on in case they had to flee in the middle of the night.

The ex-partner confessed that she slept with her shoes on in case she had to flee

“He is a diabolical person,” the prosecutor said. “He caused that person’s death with his feet, he didn’t even have to get his hands dirty. Why didn’t he strangle her? Why didn’t he end her life in two minutes?” the prosecutor asked. “Because all he wanted was to make her suffer by giving her endless kicks.” The man has stated that he does not remember anything that happened and that he felt like he was living a nightmare.

The lay jury did not believe him. According to the verdict, the defendant “knowing that the victim could not defend herself because of her age and her weak health condition, making her a very vulnerable person with no possibility to defend herself or escape” threw her to the ground to continue assaulting her, thus ensuring she would not move.

The jury believes there is no evidence that he was under the influence of alcohol

On the other hand, the members of the Jury have considered that there is no evidence that the accused was affected by alcohol at the time the events occurred. Therefore, they have not recognized the analogous mitigating circumstance of intoxication.

After the reading of the verdict, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the private prosecution have requested permanent revisable imprisonment for the defendant and compensation of 300,000 euros for the heirs of the deceased. His lawyer has requested that a lower compensation be imposed on his client. The presiding judge of the Jury Court will issue the sentence in the coming days.
