The Mediterranean route is now the main entry point for irregular immigration by sea in Spain, a reversal of the situation in the Canary Islands that reflects the growing increase of the Algerian route. Until August 15, the peninsular coasts had recorded 5,152 arrivals by sea, compared to 4,808 registered in the Canary Islands. That is 344 more people, when just a year ago the situation was radically different: the Canary archipelago accumulated 11,883 arrivals compared to 3,928 on the Peninsula, according to the official statistics from the Ministry of the Interior.
The Government held an almost monographic meeting of the Council of Ministers this Tuesday to mitigate the economic and social impact caused by the migration crisis unleashed at the end of July in Ceuta and approved this Tuesday an Urgent Measures Royal Decree-law that will mobilize 309 million euros in the remainder of 2026 — to which another 50 million in ICO guarantee lines are added. Around 13,600 residents of the town of Wilhelmshaven, in northern Germany, will be evacuated this Tuesday following the discovery of an unexploded American bomb from World War II.
