Five Navarra regional police officers died this Wednesday in an accident on the AP-8 highway, in Elgoibar (Gipuzkoa), after their vehicle collided with a tanker truck, according to a message on X by María Chivite, president of the Government of Navarra. The accident, reported by the Basque Department of Security, occurred around 9:15 a.m. at kilometer 69 for reasons that are still unknown.

The Ertzaintza is already investigating the causes of the accident. The deceased officers, reports Diario de Navarra, belonged to the Central Intervention Brigade and the Special Intervention Group and were heading to conduct training and test equipment alongside the Basque autonomous police at their base in Iurreta (Bizkaia). The truck driver has been taken to a hospital.
The Foral Police has expressed in a statement its “deep sorrow” for the death of five colleagues, while conveying all its “affection and support” to the families and loved ones of the deceased officers, “with whom we are prepared to share this profound sorrow that we all feel and that will leave an indelible mark on our memory.”
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia have joined in the grief over the death of the five members of the Navarra Foral Police. “Shocked by the tragic accident in which five officers of the Navarra Foral Police have died. Our heartfelt remembrance and condolences to the families of the victims and their colleagues,” the Royal House expressed through a message on the social network X.

The president of the Government of Navarra, María Chivite, has expressed being “shocked by the terrible accident.” “All my affection to their families and colleagues for the loss of our public servants. The Government of Navarra and I ourselves accompany you in this moment of sorrow,” the president said in a message on the social network X.
Also on the social network X, the lehendakari Imanol Pradales conveyed, “from the heart,” his “solidarity, affection, and condolences to the families and friends” of the five deceased Foral officers. The incident, he said, has “shaken” Euskadi causing “sadness, pain, and helplessness” in the face of a “serious” accident.
Additionally, the first vice president, minister of Presidency and Equality, and spokesperson of the Government of Navarra, Javier Remírez, has informed that the Foral Executive will pay tribute to the deceased in an institutional act.
