A red alert besieges the south of Valencia and Murcia this Thursday with temperatures of 44°C

The red alert (extraordinary health risk due to heat) will besiege areas of the southeast of the country this Thursday, more specifically, the southern coast of Valencia and Alicante, as well as the Vega del Segura and the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas, in Murcia, with temperatures ranging between 42 and 44°C. Extreme heat will mainly affect the peninsular east with high temperature warnings in eleven autonomous communities, with six of them on orange alert (significant danger) and five on yellow alert, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

The maximum temperature for this Thursday is estimated to be 44°C in the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas and in the Vega del Segura, in Murcia. The red alert will be active in these territories, as well as on the southern coast of Alicante and Valencia, where a maximum of 42°C is expected.

Six communities on orange alert

The orange alert will be concentrated in the east of the Peninsula. It will be active in Aragon, with maximums of between 37°C and 40°C in the Huesca Pyrenees, Central and Southern Huesca, Cinco Vilas de Zaragoza, the Ebro Riverbank of Zaragoza, Iberian Zaragoza, Bajo Aragón de Teruel and Albarracín and Jiloca, with the exception of Gúdar and Maestrazgo, which will be on yellow alert. 

Maximum temperatures will range between 37°C and 41°C in Catalonia (Lleida Pyrenees and central depression of Tarragona and Lleida and Southern Prelitoral of Tarragona).

The Valencian Community, in addition to the red warning, will have an orange alert in the southern interior of Castellón, Interior, southern interior and northern coast of Valencia and interior and northern coast of Alicante, with maximum temperatures between 39°C and 42°C. 

The orange warning will also be active in the Altiplano and Northwest of Murcia, with maximums of 42°C and 40°C, respectively. The exception will be Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón, on yellow alert. 

La Mancha Albaceteña, Alcaraz y Segura and Hellín y Almansa could exceed 42°C

The orange level will also apply in some areas of Castilla La Mancha, more specifically in the Serranía de Cuenca, La Mancha de Ciudad Real, Hellín y Almansa, Alcaraz y Segura and La Mancha Albaceteña. In these last three regions, the maximum temperature will be 39°C, but it could exceed 42°C, the red alert threshold.

In Andalusia, the orange level will mainly be in the east of the community (Cazorla y Segura, Guadix y Baza, Nacimiento y Campo de Tabernas, Valle del Almanzora y Los Vélez), although also in the demarcations of Morena y Condado, Valle del Guadalquivir de Jaén, the Genil Basin, Cordovan Campiña, Grazalema, Antequera and Sol y Guadalhorce.

Yellow alert

The yellow alert will be concentrated mainly in the central area and will do so with temperatures that will generally range between 35°C and 38°C. 

It will affect the Community of Madrid (Metropolitana y Henares, Sierra de Madrid y Sur, Vegas y Oeste), and the east and center of Castilla y León, in Soria (Ibérica, Meseta y Sistema Central), Segovia (in the Meseta y Sistema Central), Ávila (Sur y Sistema Central) and in the Meseta de Valladolid.

It will also affect Castilla La Mancha in the Alcarria and Serranía de Guadalajara, the Alcarria and La Mancha conquense, La Mancha toledana, the Guadiana and Tagus Valley, the Montes de Toledo and those of the north and Anchuras, the Sierras de Alcudia and Madrona and the Sierra de San Vicente.
