Manuel Jesús Fernández Serrano, artistically known as Manolo Solo, passed away this Thursday at the age of 62, according to a statement from the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain.

Solo, born in Algeciras, was a winner of a Goya Award for Best Supporting Actor for Tarde para la ira, a film directed by Raúl Arévalo and winner of the Goya Award for Best Film in 2016. The Andalusian actor was also nominated for a Goya for B, la película, a film about the Bárcenas case in which he played Judge Pablo Ruz, before whom the former treasurer of the Popular Party testified in 2013.
The actor is one of the most well-known faces in Spanish cinema for his participation in films such as Celda 211 or the recent Una quinta portuguesa. He also was part of the cast of the film El buen patrón, starring Javier Bardem and directed by Fernando León de Aranoa. Manolo was also nominated for a Goya for this work, in 2021.

One of the first to say goodbye to the actor was filmmaker Santiago Segura, who, through X, lamented the loss of a “great actor and a great guy.” “Very sad about the passing of Manolo Solo, a great actor (as well as a great guy), Goya winner for his role in Tarde para la ira. I worked with him on the set of El gran Vázquez, where he played the brilliant Francisco Ibáñez,” he posted.
