The instruction court number 3 of Esplugues has ordered provisional imprisonment for the accused of killing a 41-year-old woman last Saturday in the Finestrelles neighborhood of the municipality. The man, of Moroccan nationality, slit the victim’s throat, who was of Chinese nationality, after stabbing her several times in the abdomen and chest. The attack, according to initial hypotheses, was gratuitous. The victim was calmly walking down the street where she lived when she was attacked by the aggressor without any prior relationship.

The investigation is open for the crimes of murder, attempted homicide, injuries, serious threats, and damage, according to the High Court of Justice of Catalonia. The Mossos d’Esquadra currently rule out that the accused acted with jihadist motivations and have not found any witness who indicated hearing the aggressor utter terrorist slogans. Investigators are analyzing the motive of the arrested person to see if any sign of radicalization might appear. For this reason, the court does not attribute any terrorism-related crime to him. During today’s hearing, the arrested person only answered his lawyer’s questions.
The murder was committed by a person who was “disturbed,” according to the Interior Minister
The Interior Minister, Núria Parlon, stated this Monday that the man is a person who was “disturbed” and “probably” had some kind of problem “that has nothing to do with jihadism.” Parlon denounced that some sectors have taken advantage of a “tragedy” like that of Esplugues to make these kinds of associations and “generate fear and foster hatred”: “We are not here nor will we be found here.”

The Mossos d’Esquadra maintain an open investigation to try to determine the causes that led last Saturday to a man killing with a large knife in the street in Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona) a woman about 40 years old, in a case where gender-based violence is currently ruled out. Parlon detailed in statements to Rac-1 that she is not aware that the detainee uttered Islamist slogans before attacking the woman with a bladed weapon and has insisted on his state of “emotional imbalance.”

“I am not aware of that as such. What the police proceedings have expressed to us is that the person was probably under a situation of emotional imbalance and that it could even be some kind of outbreak that caused him to act in a totally irrational way. This is recorded in the proceedings,” she indicated. The man, according to sources close to the investigation, stabbed the woman several times on Joan Miró street in the Barcelona town, near the Sant Joan de Déu hospital.
Located in Les Corts
Several units of the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Medical Emergency System (SEM) went to the scene, but the medical personnel could not save the woman’s life. After the attack, the man fled the scene but was later located by the police on the border between Esplugues and Barcelona, already in the Les Corts district of the Catalan capital, where he was arrested.
