A plainclothes couple from the Urban Guard detained on Wednesday night one of the individuals living in the troubled apartment of a block on Muntaner Street in Barcelona, which they have turned into an “unsafe” space for the rest of the neighbors. The individual was accused of theft after he showed up at the building at night carrying a bicycle from one of the rental companies operating in the city. The man was unable to prove that the bicycle had been legally rented, nor did he explain why he intended to take it up to the fourth floor, and he ended up arrested, according to police sources confirmed to La Vanguardia.

In recent hours, controls around the block have intensified, with identifications of all people entering or leaving the building who have the problematic apartment as their destination or origin. The Mossos d’Esquadra from the Eixample district had been working for several weeks to alleviate the torment the neighbors are suffering, according to police sources consulted by this newspaper. Those interlocutors assure that long before the victims went to Rac1 or detailed their problem to La Vanguardia, they had held meetings with those affected, told them they were working, but that the context was complicated to manage.
The police who have worked in the area insist that the apartment in question is not a drug den. There is no trafficking. Drugs are consumed and shared, with the consequences for coexistence that this has for the rest of the building’s residents. Some people insist that they live in “fear,” do not feel safe in their own homes, and have even hired a private security guard this August who patrols the landings at night to prevent suspects from accessing their empty homes during the summer.
