Prague Zoo uses tons of ice this Thursday to help its animals cope with another heat wave hitting Europe. The polar bears Aleut and Gregor waste no time and start rolling over piles of ice cubes as soon as they go out to their outdoor enclosure in the morning.

The twins seem to enjoy this refreshing ice gift, designed to keep them cool amid rising temperatures, which are expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius this Thursday. “The bears cool off with the ice and, at the same time, it provides enrichment for their life in the zoo,” explains Filip Masek, the zoo spokesperson.
The park began offering this type of treatment to some other animals two years ago in response to climate change, which causes an increase in the number of days with extreme temperatures.

This year, the plan is to provide them with ice for up to ten days in July and August, traditionally the hottest months. However, the first heat wave arrives earlier than expected and the country records its hottest day ever measured, with 41.9 degrees Celsius, on June 28.
