The Government of Catalonia has approved in this Tuesday’s Executive Council the awarding of the Gold Medal of the Generalitat to chef Ferran Adrià (L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, 1962) and to the physicist and director of the ALBA Synchrotron Caterina Biscari (Sicily, 1957). With this award, Salvador Illa’s Executive wants to recognize two “extraordinary” careers that have “projected Catalonia into the world” in the fields of gastronomy, innovation, and science.

The Gold Medal is the highest distinction granted by the Generalitat, which in this case will be awarded next September 8 in an institutional event in the Sant Jordi hall of the Palau de la Generalitat. President Illa will lead the ceremony.
Illa himself announced the granting of this recognition on social media highlighting the profile of the awardees. In Adrià’s case, the Government emphasizes that he has “renewed the language of contemporary gastronomy and has placed Catalan cuisine at the center of global innovation.” Furthermore, it values that the chef “has projected Catalan gastronomy internationally and has made innovation, rigor, and the transmission of knowledge inseparable elements of his legacy.”

Regarding Biscari, the Government recognizes that this scientist “has strengthened the projection of research carried out from Catalonia,” that her career “combines scientific excellence, service to society, and cooperative leadership,” and that she has also been a “reference for women in science and has contributed to making their presence visible in the decision-making spaces of European research.”
“Ferran Adrià and Caterina Biscari represent excellence, innovation, rigor, and the will to transmit to society the fruits of creativity and research,” the Executive points out in a statement.
