The European Parliament gave the green light this Thursday to a resolution supporting Ceuta promoted by the Popular Party, which was approved with all the far-right and some liberal deputies but without the socialist group (339 votes in favor and 225 votes against). The text expresses “deep concern” about the regularization of immigrants and calls for greater control of the European Union’s cooperation funds with third countries.

These are two of the amendments promoted by Patriots for Europe, the political family of Vox, and by the Conservatives and Reformists. Both were approved, making it impossible for the socialists to accept the text. The president of the European socialists, Iratxe García, had already made it clear that they would reject any mention of the regularization policy.
One of the amendments called for the “immediate” suspension of all funding to Morocco until the Ceuta crisis was resolved; however, this measure was not approved. In line with cooperation with third countries, the text states that it “must be accompanied by full respect for the territorial integrity of the Member States.”

The two main political families – Popular and Socialists – were unable to agree on a common text due to differences over the Government’s management and also over Morocco’s role in the crisis in the autonomous city, which explains the significant opposition the text has generated despite being approved.
