The DAO of the Civil Guard: “It is my superiors who have decided that I remain in the position”

The Deputy Operational Director (DAO) of the Civil Guard, Manuel Llamas, is giving many explanations. Yesterday he testified before the judge of the National Court Santiago Pedraz as an investigated party for the alleged crimes of obstruction of justice and malfeasance in the so-called Leire case, the PSOE plumber, for more than two hours.

Today he appeared in the Senate in the investigation commission of the Koldo case where opposition senators subjected him to a tough interrogation. According to the summary, Llamas asked the agents of the central operative unit (UCO) to “stand aside” and to “not be proactive” in investigations related to the cases of the brother and wife of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.

“I do not recognize myself in the phrase of standing aside. I have never asked anyone to abstain and if I am here in the Senate it is because I never stand aside,” said Lieutenant Colonel Llamas, the highest-ranking uniformed officer of the Civil Guard and number two to the director of the corps, Mercedes González, who is also under investigation in the PSOE plumber case.

However, Llamas did confirm that “I may have told the agents not to be proactive,” but he explained that he gave them that advice simply because “many times there is an excess of protagonism and vanity among the members of the corps and those are roles that do not correspond to us since it is the judge and not us who must investigate.”

Llamas assures that he has a clear conscience and is “innocent” and that, consequently, he does not intend to resign as opposition senators have asked him. The DAO of the Civil Guard responded to UPN senator María Caballero that he remains in the position because “it is my superiors who have decided that I stay in the post.” And he specified that the one who demands that he not leave is mainly the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

The DAO does not intend to leave his position “unless I am dismissed.” “I will not leave until things take shape. I will not resign for the moment, I will not do so until my honor is really questioned and that would happen with a sentence, but right now there is nothing at all,” he emphasized.
