Sumar has rejected the decision of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition to authorize the extension of the life of the Almaraz nuclear power plant until 2030 and considers that the measure constitutes a breach of the agreements for the formation of government between the PSOE and the political party.

In a statement, Sumar assures that the extension of operations at Almaraz is “a decision serving the oligopoly that hinders the energy transition and mortgages the citizens.” The maintenance of the nuclear park, it states, “obeys corporate pressures and not technical, environmental, or economic competitiveness needs.”
Additionally, Los Comuns have distributed a statement in which the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, goes further and states that there has been a “breach” of the agreement between the PSOE and Sumar. “It is a breach of the government agreement between PSOE and Sumar and, therefore, we express our rejection,” he says.
In its statement, Sumar expresses its “most absolute disagreement” with the extension of the life of the Extremaduran plant and considers that “it represents a profound break of the commitment expressed for years with the citizens.”
Among its arguments are also that it “postpones real decarbonization supported by renewables” and that “unacceptable costs and risks are imposed on society.” It also maintains that the measure increases the price of energy.

According to it, there are “constant breaches in safety matters by Iberdrola, Endesa, and Naturgy,” so it predicts that “the costs of extending the useful life of the plant will fall on public coffers and mortgage budgets and, with that, the resources allocated to citizens.”

Sumar understands that extending the authorization of the plant is “following the path of the right and the far right,” and demands six measures, including maintaining the agreed closure schedule, continuing with the taxes applicable to the nuclear park, and demanding that the fees cover “the real cost of waste management and dismantling without passing it on to the citizens.”
It also calls for channeling investments towards storage and the integration of renewables, auditing Enresa’s accounts, demanding direct subsidiary responsibility from the companies owning the plants, and approving an economic and productive transition plan for the Almaraz environment.
