Fighter jets participating in a NATO air defense mission have shot down a drone that entered the airspace of Latvia, a NATO and European Union member, in the early hours of Friday, according to the Latvian Armed Forces via the social network X.

The Armed Forces also raised an air threat alert in regions near Russia. Finland, another EU and NATO member state that also shares a border with Russia, temporarily restricted air and maritime traffic zones in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, according to its defense forces on X, as a precautionary measure against the possible presence of drones.

So far, no further details are known about the possible origin of the drone, although this is not the first episode of this kind in countries neighboring Russia and Ukraine. Following the war between these two countries, the Baltic and northern European states have shot down multiple drones and issued air threat alerts among their populations.

During Thursday night, Russia shot down 15 drones in the Leningrad region, near Finland and Estonia and where Saint Petersburg is located, the country’s second-largest city and an important export center, according to regional governor Alexander Drozdenko early Friday via Telegram.
Russia’s northern neighbors who are part of NATO are strengthening security around dams, power plants, and natural gas infrastructure, reflecting growing concern that Moscow could carry out a “false flag” attack against them using Ukrainian drones.
