In the midst of a political, judicial, and media earthquake following the indictment of former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for alleged crimes of criminal organization, influence peddling, or money laundering, Alberto Núñez Feijóo has issued an urgent demand for Pedro Sánchez’s resignation. “What are you still doing there, tarnishing the presidency of the Government of Spain one more day?” the leader of the Popular Party asked the head of the Executive during the control session in Congress this Wednesday, following the accusations from the National Court judge against who is, he emphasized, his “moral beacon.”

Feijóo’s verbal attack, however, did not catch Sánchez off guard, as he was already prepared to withstand the storm of this parliamentary session. “All my support to President Zapatero,” said the head of government, who defended the figure and legacy of his socialist predecessor in office, and reiterated that he does not intend to resign or call early general elections. “You reach the government with votes, not shortcuts,” he replied. He thus insisted that the general elections will be in 2027, that he will run as the PSOE candidate, and, “if the Spanish people want,” he will continue for another four years, or even eight, in Moncloa.
