The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Thursday that the fires affecting the provinces of Ávila and Madrid, which have devastated more than 75,000 hectares, have been lowered to level 2, thus ending the national interest emergency.

Sánchez stated this from the advanced command post in Navaluenga (Ávila), created to coordinate the management of the fires: “We have proceeded from the National Civil Protection System to accept the proposal to move to operational level 2 and therefore leave behind the national emergency.”

This decision has been made with the approval of the Junta of Castilla y León and the Community of Madrid, and following the technical criteria of the operational command, which until now was held by the Military Emergency Unit (UME).

There was also a message of reassurance to the residents of the towns where work is still underway to control and stop the advance of the fire. Referring to the affected towns, he said they “have to be calm” because, despite the change in operational command, both the UME and the National Civil Protection System will remain deployed in the area.
The fires, which have lasted for weeks, have affected much of the provinces of Ávila and Madrid and have caused significant environmental damage.
