Pepe Habichuela (José Antonio Carmona Carmona) passed away this Tuesday at the age of 82 in Madrid, according to El País, after suffering from an illness that kept him off the stage in 2024.

The flamenco guitar master was born in Granada in 1944, and was part of the third generation of an important flamenco dynasty from the Andalusian city, where his artistic beginnings took place.
At 20 years old he moved to Madrid, where he performed in tablaos and shared the bill with artists such as Juanito Valderrama, Camarón de la Isla, and Enrique Morente. It was from the 1970s onwards that he set a new course for flamenco and fostered the enormous diffusion this art enjoys today, as his technical and harmonic innovations have influenced several subsequent generations.

The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, published a message on his X account thanking the artist for his “life dedicated to art” and highlighting his contribution to “our cultural heritage.”
