ERC convenes its national council this Monday to assess the approval of the budgets

The week of May 18th looks to be key for the budgets and, by extension, for the legislature in Catalonia. The Govern and Esquerra Republicana are finalizing the last aspects of what will be the first accounts to be produced since 2023. Monday will be a key day: it will start with the seal of the pact to develop the orbital railway line and, at 5:30 p.m., the republicans will convene their national council – the highest body between congresses – to assess whether they give the final yes to the budget project.

Vox's worries about the burka

Vox’s worries about the burka

“Just because it has never happened does not mean we are not prepared when it does.” The phrase, from a Vox spokesperson, does not refer to the prevention of a health or climate emergency, but to the possibility of a woman dressed in a burka or niqab entering public offices. Specifically, in the Diputación de Valencia, the latest institution to join, this very week, the several dozen town halls, half of the regional parliaments, and even the Congress itself, which have voted on initiatives promoted by the far right against the use of the full Islamic veil (burka or niqab) in public buildings. The texts – only half of which have succeeded – mostly urge the Government to legislate on the matter, as it is a state competence. But the left refuses to ban the veil, for reasons of religious freedom and because there are no burkas in Spain and the niqab is a minority.

The Plus Ultra plot celebrated the rescue with champagne and oysters: “The SEPI does not approve those expenses;”

Oysters and champagne. And with large doses of mockery. This is how the Plus Ultra leadership celebrated the airline’s bailout, with a public aid of 53 million euros, which is the basis of the judicial case in the National Court in which the former Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is under investigation. This is evidenced by a photograph sent by the company’s CEO, Roberto Roselli, to Julio Martínez, a friend of the former socialist leader, in a restaurant, accompanied by the message: Warning to navigators: SEPI does not approve those expenses.” To which they respond in the chat with a “Relax, that comes out of the 1% [referring to the commission that would have been paid for the bailout]”.

Government and unions reach a preliminary agreement to unlock the educational conflict

Teachers’ unions have just signed peace with the Generalitat Government in exchange for a 400 euro monthly salary increase in 2029. The Administration has improved the teachers’ salary raise by 50 euros compared to yesterday’s proposal, which has pleased the majority of the union organizations, including Ustec. The Government thus yields to the requests by incorporating into the pact an additional amount of money that would be around 670 million, added to the 2,000 million already agreed upon in March.

The autonomous communities halt tax cuts, except Madrid

The autonomous communities halt tax cuts, except Madrid

Almost all autonomous communities under the common regime are halting the tax cuts they approved in previous years. The years are coming to an end when the prevailing trend was to approve reductions in transferred taxes, such as in the IRPF, inheritance and donations, or wealth tax. The current trend is quite the opposite, warns the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (Airef) in its latest report. The only exception is Madrid, which continues to increase its tax reductions.
