OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for teenagers today, a version of its AI chatbot that includes stronger safety measures, “including features that encourage healthy use and additional controls for parents.” It is a version of the popular AI that has been “designed to help teenagers learn, think critically, deepen their understanding, and use AI confidently,” according to the company’s blog. The system will not work in the European Union for the time being.

Access to ChatGPT for teenagers does not have a button or mode that allows access. It is a special account setting that ChatGPT applies when it identifies that a user is probably underage. To decide this, OpenAI uses an age prediction system that analyzes patterns such as conversation topics, usage times, and account age among other factors. If the AI estimates that the holder is under 18, it automatically activates this mode, which has additional protections and some limitations.
