The Republican insisted again this Monday during an exchange with journalists in the Oval Office, considering it would be a “very good idea.” It is not the first time that Donald Trump, faced with a foreign policy obstacle, launches a surprising proposal or a threat to annex foreign territory.
Since his return to power, he has threatened to turn Canada into the “51st” U.S. state, seize Greenland, and has even suggested taking control of the Gaza Strip, although without putting any of these proposals into practice.

His suggestion about Hormuz comes at a time when a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Iran and the United States seems farther away than ever. Washington and Tehran present conditions that are a priori irreconcilable for the reopening of the strait, a crucial step for the global oil trade.
