King Juan Carlos returned to Barcelona this Thursday to say a final goodbye to his friend Josep Cusí. In a lightning trip from Geneva, the King’s father stayed several hours at the deceased’s home to accompany the family in these sad moments.

Although they had not seen each other since before the King’s father self-exiled in Abu Dhabi in the summer of 2020, contact with Cusí has been constant over all these years, through video calls or by phone, and although on some occasions King Juan Carlos wanted to visit his friend when he suffered some health setback, it was Cusí himself who downplayed his ailments, aware that a visit from King Juan Carlos to Barcelona, especially during the tough times of the procés, could cause him some discomfort.
This Thursday, after learning on Wednesday of his friend’s passing, King Juan Carlos decided to come to Barcelona to, in the strictest privacy, express to the deceased’s family his deep sorrow. Josep Cusí was bid farewell in the strictest privacy by the express wish of his widow, Inés Muiños, children, grandchildren, and other relatives. The closest, including King Juan Carlos, kept each other company to comfort one another in these moments.

It had been more than ten years since King Juan Carlos last set foot in the Catalan capital, a setting he shared for years with Josep Cusí and his family. In the former head of state’s relationship with Catalonia, beyond the institutional, Cusí played a big role, from the regular medical check-ups, first at Clínica San José and later at Cima and Planas, which were coordinated by the shipowner, as well as appointments with the hairdresser Iranzo, shopping at Santa Eulalia, or lunches at Semon. In some way, those visits where King Juan Carlos enjoyed greater privacy compared to Madrid also helped him better understand the Catalan reality and establish bonds of friendship with prominent members of Barcelona’s civil society.
One must not forget the close relationship with the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, whose burgee was always carried by the Bribón that participated in many regattas organized at the Barcelona club.
