The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Edmondo Cirielli, called on Spain this Monday to “assume its responsibilities” for the regularization of immigrants and insisted that they will maintain controls on passengers coming from Spain by air and sea “at least until mid-August” and then will evaluate the situation.
This was emphasized by Edmondo Cirielli in an interview with the newspaper Corriere della Sera, reported by Askanews, during which he demanded that the Spanish Government “assume its responsibilities” after its decision to proceed with the regularization of foreigners despite the opposition of Rome and other European countries.
“This is not a suspension of the Schengen area, it is a measure provided for in the Dublin Regulation,” Cirielli stated, pointing out that France and Germany apply similar measures against Italy, and that Italy applies similar measures at the border with Slovenia. “We are only talking about third-country nationals,” he clarified.
Cirielli showed understanding towards Spain, but insisted that “security is a priority” for the government of the transalpine country.
Madrid, he noted, “has opted for a regularization to which Italy and many other countries were opposed. It was precisely that prospect that prompted this large number of young people to emigrate,” overlooking that Giorgia Meloni’s government initially attributed the decision to the entry of more than 70,000 migrants into Ceuta, coming from Morocco.
For the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, “no one wants to worsen the situation” and he rejected ultimatums between the two countries. “There should be no ultimatums between us. The friendship between our peoples is stronger than any government,” he added.
