FACUA-Consumers in Action has warned that consumer protection authorities have ordered the withdrawal of six models of glasses for the solar eclipse due to the risk of eye injuries.

These are products from the brands Lionstar, ECP Eye Care Proffesional, Pelispan, Homanaje, Orro and Opticalia whose “irregularities” have been detected by the consumer administrations of the Community of Madrid, Castilla y León, Galicia, La Rioja, and Aragón, according to FACUA.
“The six models of glasses share the irregularities detected by the consumer bodies, which may occur in many other products that have been marketed or given away in recent months,” the organization warned.
The risk lies in using an excessively dark filter which, despite protecting, may cause users to remove the glasses to frame the Sun
The description of the risk indicated in all market withdrawal and marketing prohibition orders is as follows: “The user puts on the glasses to observe the solar eclipse. Since the filter is below the minimum transmittance (excessively dark), the user only sees total darkness and cannot locate the solar disc. As a predictable reaction, and facing the sun, the user slides the glasses up to the forehead, tilts them, or removes them briefly to frame the position of the sun with the intention of putting them back on immediately. During that unprotected interval, the eyes are directly exposed to direct solar radiation (visible and infrared/ultraviolet radiation). A chemical or thermal injury occurs in the foveal cells of the retina.”
The glasses from the brands Lionstar (model LSP1), ECP Eye Care Proffesional, Pelispan, Homanaje (model QW-50Z1), Orro (model O37-R), and Opticalia were included in the alert networks for hazardous non-food products coordinated by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 with the prohibition of marketing and immobilization of the located units.
