In a ruling issued this Tuesday, the court requires the presence of Jordi Pujol i Soley to be examined by a forensic doctor, before the start of the hearing, scheduled for 10 in the morning.

At the start of the trial, at the end of November, Jordi Pujol underwent a medical examination by a forensic doctor from the National Court, who traveled to his Barcelona home, while another doctor informed the tribunal in the courtroom of the National Court’s San Fernando de Henares headquarters.

The trial is scheduled to resume next Monday with the statements of the accused, after 28 sessions in which around 250 witnesses, police officers, and experts in fiscal and tax law have appeared.

The trial is entering its final phase, with the statements of the accused. They will begin with the Pujol family. First, and if he is able, with the former president, and then with his seven children, his ex-daughter-in-law, and nine businessmen accused of having paid bribes to the family in exchange for public works contracts.

In November, the former president was exempted from appearing in Madrid. His defense lawyers had presented medical reports certifying significant cognitive deterioration, with signs of Alzheimer’s, which was ratified by the judicial doctors in that first session of the trial. Pujol underwent a test that showed random memory.

Although Pujol wished to intervene in the trial, his children hoped that his medical condition would advise an individual dismissal for him, but that did not happen. The family was outraged by the National Court’s decision to keep him in the case.

The court also allowed the attendance of the defendants at the trial to be voluntary. Jordi Pujol Ferrusola has been the only one who has attended practically all sessions. In many of them, accompanied by the businessman (and friend) Luis Delso, also accused.

The seven Pujol Ferrusola children (and Jordi Pujol Ferrusola’s ex-wife, Mercè Gironès) face prison sentences ranging from 8 to 29 years; for the former president, the request is 9 years.
