Former Prime Minister José Luís Rodríguez Zapatero will grant an interview to public television this Thursday. It is his first public appearance after his indictment and after having testified before judge José Luís Calama, who is investigating him in the Audiencia Nacional.
The interview also comes just two days after Julio Martínez Martínez, who until now had been his personal friend and partner, testified before the judge and pointed to the former president as the true mastermind behind the businesses that precisely led them to court.
In this interview, Zapatero should also clarify what he promised to explain within “little more than a week” on the day he testified before Judge Calama more than a month ago: what is the origin of the jewels that were seized from a safe in his office and whose value has been estimated, according to a judicial appraisal, at more than one million euros. It remains to be seen whether he will give this explanation or reserve it for a possible statement before the judge.
