Two men from Granollers have been arrested in southern Paraguay accused of the murder of two people and the attempted homicide of a third, with whom they had arranged to meet for the supposed sale of gold, National Police sources told EFE on Friday.

The head of the Directorate of Investigation of Punishable Acts of the National Police, Commissioner Javier Flores, explained that the murder took place on Thursday, when the Catalans, a father and his son, drove the three Paraguayans to a house inside a recreational park in the city of Encarnación, capital of the Itapúa department (south), which borders Argentina.

The individuals, whom local media have identified as Fernando Barrionuevo Urbaneja and his son Aitor Barrionuevo Guirao, natives of Granollers (Barcelona), promised to make the delivery of the gold at that place in exchange for about 370 million guaraníes (almost 54,000 euros).
But, once at the site, they were tied up and shot to seize the money, killing two of them and leaving a third injured, who feigned death and then escaped to seek help. According to the police chief, the men did not have gold for sale, but “stones” or golden minerals that they intended to pass off as the precious metal.

After raiding the house where the men were hiding, the Police seized documents proving their Spanish nationality, as well as a safe, computers, two Rolex watches, fragments of alleged gold, and cash, according to details published this Friday by the Paraguayan newspaper ABC.
The commissioner also told EFE that three other people of Bolivian nationality (identified by the local press as Luis Andrés Uriarte Gutiérrez, Scheila Liz Magno Mosay, and Beihit Eugenia Gutiérrez Piza), two women who are partners of the Catalans and a man who accompanied them, were arrested while it is investigated whether they are related to the crime.
Likewise, Flores pointed out that the survivor identified the Catalans as responsible for the crime and that their identities were confirmed through “a pertinent inquiry through the responsible agencies.”
