Tobías Martínez assumes the presidency of Openchip

Tobías Martínez has been appointed president of Openchip, one of the most promising companies in the microchip industry in Barcelona. Market sources confirm that the former Cellnex executive will take over from Carles Kinder.

Telecommunications engineer and graduate of IESE, Tobías Martínez has been the architect of the growth of Cellnex Telecom, a wireless telecommunications services and infrastructure company listed on the Ibex 35. During his tenure, which lasted from 2015 to 2023, the company multiplied its international presence and became the main European operator of mobile infrastructures.

All this professional experience endorses him as president of Openchip. This Barcelona-based company – led by CEO Francesc Guim – is working on the development of a microprocessor, which will be key for high-performance computers that process all the information generated by artificial intelligence.

The product has not yet reached the market – Openchip expects to launch the first prototype in 2026 and sell on a large scale in 2028 – but it has strong support from the public sector. Last year, the company raised 111 million euros from the European Next Generation funds and another 25 million from public funds.
