The Pope will also use Catalan in the blessing of the tower of Jesus

Pope Leo XIV will also use Catalan in the blessing of the tower of Jesus of the Sagrada Família, at the climax of the Pontiff’s trip to Spain.

The Holy See published on Monday the missal of Robert Prevost’s trip and in that first version the blessing was entirely in Spanish, an issue that has sparked controversy in Catalonia, both in the ecclesiastical sphere and in the political arena. In the end, according to sources consulted by this newspaper, both languages will be used in what will be one of the most iconic moments of the Pontiff’s first major trip to a European country.

The Catalan Church, through the Tarraconense Episcopal Conference, which groups the ten Catalan dioceses and is presided over by the Archbishop of Tarragona, Joan Planellas, has moved before the Holy See to change the initially planned language. The Bishop of Girona, in turn, had also pointed out in the previous hours that Catalan should be included in that moment of the celebration.

Given the discomfort caused by this issue, at the institutional level, efforts have been made from the Government and from the presidency of the Parliament to negotiate with the Church to try to include Catalan in the blessing of the tower. In the solemn mass, it was already planned that there would be various fragments of the liturgy in Catalan.
