It has been three weeks since the ground gave way at the back of the Verona pizzeria, on Teodora Lamadrid street in the upper area of Barcelona. Half of the affected neighbors, those living closest to the sinkhole, have still not been able to return home, and this Friday, on the eve of August, they learned the news that some of them will not be able to do so at least until September due to the appearance of new “structural” cracks linked to the passage of the L9 metro tunnel boring machine heading towards Lesseps. Meanwhile, dump trucks of cement bags pile up around the Sant Gervasi market to continue covering the huge hole in the restaurant, beneath which runs one of the streams descending from Collserola.

The incident forced the evacuation of eight buildings with a total of 93 homes where about 300 neighbors from the Sant Gervasi-La Bonanova neighborhood live. On July 20, residents of numbers 56 and 58 on Sant Gervasi de Cassoles street were able to return to their homes. This week, those from number 6 Rubinstein have been returning, and next week those from 54 Sant Gervasi de Cassoles should do the same. The neighbors of numbers 2 and 4 Rubinstein and 3 and 5 Teodorora Lamadrid will not be so lucky, with a date given for September, without much specificity.

Neighbors who requested advances will start receiving money in the coming days
Sebastià Massagué, director of the Barcelona Firefighters, explained this Friday that on Wednesday night there was “a change of trend” in the positive progress of the sinkhole repair. In the basement of 2 Rubinstein, a “structural” crack and a cavity were detected that will require stabilization work that will last at least throughout August.

The Government delegate, Pilar Díaz, who visited the zero zone of the sinkhole, explained that the neighbors who have requested the first compensations (a total of 48 households) will start receiving the money in the coming days, as will the affected businesses (16), which continue to face recurring bills but do not receive a single euro. Regarding the suspension of rent, Díaz specified that about thirty apartments have requested it. In the long run, all of this should be borne by the temporary business union (UTE Mandri, a firm that has not yet commented on what happened) that is executing the L9 tunnel to Lesseps.
