On March 24, 2025, four months after the death of Isak Andic in the Montserrat mountain, his son Jonathan made a 48-hour trip to Ecuador. A brief round trip to Quito during which he spent more hours flying than in the capital. So far, it has only been revealed that the visit was related to a new publishing project that required his presence and that while there his phone was stolen. A loss that the judge in Martorell questioned and that the Mossos d’Esquadra now resolve by proving that the device did indeed travel to the Ecuadorian capital and was used.

From his laptop, still in Ecuador, Jonathan Andic sent a WhatsApp message from the computer app to a Mango executive secretary asking them to prepare the new iPhone 16 Pro that he had already ordered a few days after his father’s death, but had not picked up.

That device, the one Jonathan Andic was carrying the day his father died, is among the evidence that magistrate Raquel Nieto includes in the provisional bail detention order from May 19, following the arrest of the businessman’s son. The judge referred to the “strange circumstances” in which the phone disappeared and questioned the theft that Jonathan claimed to have suffered in a square in Quito.
When investigators became aware of the disappearance of the device, they tried to verify one of the hypotheses they considered: that the iPhone never actually traveled to Ecuador and that the trip served as an alibi to make an important element for the investigation disappear. The Mossos requested practically all Ecuadorian telephone companies to confirm whether Jonathan Andic’s number had connected to their networks during those days. Seven responded negatively.
Awaiting the appeal from the Court
Lawyer Cristóbal Martell signed and submitted on May 28 an appeal to the Barcelona Court against the provisional bail detention order of one million euros for Jonathan Andic, for the alleged homicide of his father. A 27-page document in which the lawyer refuted the seven pieces of evidence the Martorell judge used to accuse the defendant. Since then, the three magistrates of the ninth chamber have been preparing an order that all parties eagerly await because it will verify the validity the higher court jurists give to the accumulated evidence against Jonathan Andic, in the absence of direct proof.
Additionally, investigators verified that the Health app on Jonathan’s phone stopped recording activity from the morning of the trip, even before his arrival at the airport, and did not reactivate until the defendant returned to Spain and started up his new iPhone at the Mango headquarters. This was a circumstance that had not occurred on previous trips and increased investigators’ suspicions about that brief escape to Ecuador.
The response was swift. Shortly after lawyer Cristóbal Martell filed the appeal against the detention order with the Barcelona Court, Paco Marco, head of the detective agency Método 3, hired by the defense team, showed during an interview on RAC1 the document with the call list proving that the phone had traveled to Ecuador and that Jonathan Andic had used it there until it was stolen. The defendant admitted that it never even crossed his mind to report the theft.

Now, while the Mossos investigation unit in Martorell finalizes the report that the judge ordered in July, at the prosecutor’s request, to reconstruct in detail the trip to Ecuador – what exactly he went to do and the movements of his credit cards – investigators already have Vodafone’s response.
The company explains that, due to a legal issue related to data retention periods, it does not have certain information and therefore the request arrived too late. Despite this, investigators have been able to confirm what the defense detective had vehemently asserted: the phone did travel to Ecuador and was used in Quito. Among other things, it was used to contact a local driver whom he relied on for his movements around the Ecuadorian capital.
