A new dialogue of the deaf. A month and a half after the Ceuta crisis broke out, following the avalanche of more than 70,000 immigrants that overwhelmed the Spanish border on July 30 and 31, Pedro Sánchez and Alberto Núñez Feijóo took advantage of their parliamentary duel this Wednesday, in the session of control over the Executive in the Congress of Deputies, to accuse each other of trying to “chronify” the problem, amid mutual reproaches. Their clash has once again shown that the head of government and the leader of the opposition do not have the slightest margin to try to reach any consensus solution to this serious crisis, while the new 2027 electoral cycle is already looming very close on the horizon.

The leader of the PP has tried to get from the head of the Executive some explanation about his relations, and even his latest conversations regarding this crisis, both with the Moroccan authorities and with King Mohamed VI himself. Without success.
Feijóo has warned that Morocco has confirmed before the European Parliament that “it is willing to accept all the people who entered Ceuta illegally on July 30, all of them.” Both Moroccan citizens and unaccompanied minors and also nationals of other countries. So the PP leader emphasized that there are only three options so that all the people who protagonized what he insisted on calling an “invasion” and who, in his opinion, are “making life bitter for 80,000 Spaniards and degrading the image of the nation” are not immediately returned to Morocco. “Either you don’t want to, and prefer to chronify the problem. Or you are incompetent. Or someone here is lying,” he warned.

And Sánchez responded with the same accusation. The president criticized that the PP had proposed in the European Parliament to suspend the association agreement between the EU and Morocco. “If that is the country to which most migrants will return, because they do not have the right to international protection, and that is your proposal: are you trying to chronify the problem or solve it?” For the socialist leader there is no doubt: “The only thing the PP does is put sticks in the wheels.” As happened, he recalled, with the coronavirus pandemic, the dana in Valencia, the summer fires, and now with the Ceuta crisis. “Your patriotism is removable, it’s pure facade,” Sánchez reproached Feijóo.

The PP leader complained that Sánchez had not answered him about his contacts with the authorities and the king of Morocco: “My questions have been very clear and your silence is a shame.” And he criticized the Executive’s delay in managing the returns of the 13,000 immigrants who, according to his estimate, still remain in Ceuta since the border assault in July. “How quick for some things and how slow for others,” he reproached him. “Stop minimizing the crisis and stop covering up those responsible. And don’t ask for more patience, because it has run out,” he demanded.
But Sánchez assured that “of course Ceuta will come out stronger from this crisis, thanks to the support of the Government and despite the opposition.” And he claimed the plan approved by the Council of Ministers to respond to the Ceuta crisis, endowed with 309 million euros, “with 80 million euros that we will inject into the Ceuta economy from now until the end of the year, 4% of its gross domestic product.”
