The economic and civil world bid farewell this noon to the former president of La Caixa, Josep Vilarasau, at the funeral held at the Sant Gervasi Funeral Home in Barcelona. The executive passed away last Tuesday in Barcelona at the age of 95.

Among those attending the funeral were Infanta Cristina; the president of the Parliament, Josep Rull; the president of the La Caixa Foundation, Isidro Fainé; the president of Repsol, Antoni Brufau; the president of CaixaBank, Tomás Muniesa; the CEO of CaixaBank, Gonzalo Gortázar; the general director of the La Caixa Foundation, Josep Maria Coronas; the president of Foment, Josep Sánchez Llibre; the former president of the Generalitat José Montilla; and the president of the Cercle d’Economia, Teresa Garcia-Milà.
The widow Lola Mitjanas was accompanied by her family and a large representation of personalities from the business and political world.
Also present were the president of Saba, Salvador Alemany; the Criteria board member Francesc Homs; the former general director of La Caixa, Jaime Lanaspa; and the Junts representative Albert Batet.
Yesterday, former presidents of the Generalitat Jordi Pujol and Artur Mas attended the wake, along with the Minister of the Presidency, Albert Dalmau, and the Minister of Economy, Alícia Romero.

Vilarasau (Barcelona, 1931) was one of the main drivers of the entity now transformed into the leading bank in the Spanish market (CaixaBank), the country’s leading business holding (Criteria), and one of the world’s foremost foundations (La Caixa). The honorary president of the La Caixa Foundation also undertook this process alongside Ricard Fornesa, Isidro Fainé, current president of the foundation and its investment arm Criteria, and Antoni Brufau.
Doctor in Industrial Engineering and graduate in Economic and Business Sciences, he worked as an Economics professor at the Higher School of Industrial Engineers in Madrid and received an honorary doctorate from Indiana University in 1997.
Throughout his career, he held positions of responsibility at Telefónica Nacional de España, the Ministry of Finance, and Campsa, a public oil company later privatized. On March 2, 1976, he joined La Caixa de Pensions as the new general director, becoming president of La Caixa and the La Caixa Foundation in 1999. In 2003, he was named honorary president of La Caixa, a position he held at the La Caixa Foundation from 2014 following the structural change.
