The total solar eclipse that we will see on Wednesday, if there are no clouds, has become the center of attention. Astronomy enthusiasts have been preparing for months, but the general population has been receiving a flood of information for only a few weeks. Advice is never too much to ensure that this astronomical phenomenon does not leave us with unwanted health consequences, and for that reason, it is always good to listen to the experts. But it is also true that official messages have created great marketing expectations with slogans like “The eclipse of your life” or “A unique occasion you cannot miss.” In this regard, the video Trio of eclipses published by the Ministry of Science is very eloquent and contains phrases like “The stars have aligned to grant Spain a unique privilege in modern history” or, “This story they won’t tell you, you will live it.”
It is curious because, on the one hand, the authorities encourage people to participate in the exceptional nature of the phenomenon, but upon seeing the enormous excitement caused, they have warned that there will be road closures, access prohibitions to various natural areas, and even the deployment of police and military reinforcements in some places. It seems they may have gone too far and now want to reduce the enthusiasm created among the population.
And indeed, an atmosphere of some anxiety has been fostered, as if not seeing the eclipse equates to being an outcast of society. And that is not the case either. There will be many more eclipses. In fact, Wednesday is the first of three similar phenomena that will be seen from Spain. If you miss Wednesday’s, there will be another one on August 2 next year in the south of the country, which will be the longest of the century, lasting five minutes. And if not, almost six months later, on January 26, 2028, we will see an annular eclipse from Catalonia, where the Moon will cover the sun creating “a ring of fire.” But if you like to travel, between 2028 and 2035 there will be five more solar eclipses visible worldwide.
