The first ordinary plenary session of the political course in Congress has started with the approval of a law promoted by Sumar to grant Spanish nationality to Sahrawis born under Spanish administration – before September 29, 1977 -. The law now goes to the Senate for final approval and is passed at a significant moment for relations between Spain and Morocco after the massive entry of immigrants into Ceuta from at the end of July.
The law, which regulates who can obtain Spanish nationality and what the procedure is, can benefit up to 200,000 people and has a direct impact on Morocco, which has always viewed this law with suspicion, although for now remains silent. The initiative has been promoted by Sumar and the left claims it as “a historical reparation” to the former Spanish province 53.
It should not be forgotten that the Sahara is an important element in the relations between Spain and Morocco and, under Pedro Sánchez’s mandate, a historic change has occurred after the Government made a turn and supported the Moroccan plan – renouncing neutrality – to turn the former Spanish province into an autonomous region.
