Ustec and Secondary School Teachers call off the strikes planned for this week in Girona, Barcelona, Tarragona, and Lleida from Monday to Thursday. However, they maintain the call for the strike on June 5, Friday, which they could call off depending on the result of the consultation on the pre-agreement signed with the Government, which will be known on Thursday.
The Minister of Education, Esther Niubó, has expressed that she is “very happy and very satisfied” with the preliminary agreement reached last night between the Government and the unions to resolve the educational conflict in Catalonia. In an interview on ‘El Suplement’, from Catalunya Ràdio, Niubó described the pact as a “giant step” for the educational community, which had been “underfunded” during the last decades in Catalonia, she admitted.
If the 23 days of strike this school year have made anything clear, it is that Ustec has decided to test strength with the Salvador Illa Government. Or rather, to twist its arm. The logic was simple. If the Executive took a step forward, it had to be stopped. If it proposed an agreement, raise the…

Teachers’ unions have just signed peace with the Generalitat Government in exchange for a 400 euro monthly salary increase in 2029. The Administration has improved the teachers’ salary raise by 50 euros compared to yesterday’s proposal, which has pleased the majority of the union organizations, including Ustec. The Government thus yields to the requests by incorporating into the pact an additional amount of money that would be around 670 million, added to the 2,000 million already agreed upon in March.

On February 11, thousands of teachers took to the streets to protest working conditions in schools. The strike, called by all the educational unions, reached 54% of the entire workforce. The teachers expressed their frustration over the complexity in the classrooms, the system’s demands regarding their responsibilities, and the wage freeze. That was the start of a yellow wave that has continued to be visible. It is now June and the conflict has not been resolved. What has happened since then?
The Ustec union registered a strike call from June 8 to 12 on Thursday night and an indefinite CGT strike starting on the 8th. The registration of the dates took place after failing to reach an agreement on salary and resource improvements in education following hours of negotiation. This same Friday, amid the exchange of accusations between Educació and unions, the Ustec spokesperson has already warned that if no agreement is reached, they do not rule out coming out with a strengthened schedule of mobilizations.
The standoff continues between Educació and teachers’ unions in Catalonia. Yesterday Thursday, after six hours of negotiation and 300 million more on the table, there was no agreement and the union representatives decided to lock themselves in the conselleria headquarters.
