The fight against social inequalities generated by climate change in cities is already one of the main pillars of the Pla de Barris of Catalonia. This was emphasized this Monday by Mayor Jaume Collboni during the presentation of 32 initiatives aimed at revitalizing the Barcelona neighborhood of Ciutat Meridiana, 32 initiatives that will involve an investment of more than 25 million euros to be jointly carried out by the City Council and the Generalitat between the years 2027 and 2031.
“On this occasion we are taking very much into account all the social inequalities generated by climate change – elaborated Mayor Collboni -, because it is the most vulnerable people who suffer the most from the consequences of these temperatures. Therefore, the creation of shade in public spaces, but also aid for the rehabilitation of homes and for the renewal of appliances are fundamental in this Pla de Barris call.”
Thus, this Pla de Barris call includes the provision of up to 1,200 m2 of shade in the Metro square and the Aqüeducte park, as well as the installation of cooling games and the planting of new trees. In this regard, Mayor Collboni also highlighted the rehabilitation of interior blocks and the incorporation of about ten elevators in housing blocks as other ways to ventilate this neighborhood a bit.
