The Ceuta crisis progresses marked by the absence of a convincing explanation of what happened on July 30. When there is no clear diagnosis of the causes, it is hardly possible to be effective in the solution and much less to prevent it from happening again. More than a month later, the Government has not provided a convincing account of the origin of the migrant surge. It could argue that it may be impossible to know who is behind the border assault, but the problem is that the Executive has issued different and contradictory versions. The Chief Prosecutor of the National Court, Jesús Alonso, has informed the National Court judge María Tardón that he will take on the Ceuta case, so that he, and not the assigned prosecutor, will report on the jurisdiction and acceptance for processing of the complaint filed by an accusation, according to what La Vanguardia has learned from legal sources.

The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, avoided applauding this Thursday, as the rest of the Government bench did, in Congress when Pedro Sánchez announced that his Executive would publish the reports from the Police and Spanish intelligence about the prior warnings of the massive entry of migrants into Ceuta.

The great political debate at the start of the term moves in the realm of nuances, omissions, and calculated silences. Four weeks after the president of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, left the Marivent palace, assuring that Felipe VI was “committed to visiting Ceuta,” the conflicting versions between the Executive and the Royal House have placed the trip in an uncomfortable no-man’s land. Everyone assumes it will happen, but no one sets a date for a visit whose uncertainty is beginning to become a wear for Moncloa.

The junior partner of the coalition government, Sumar, has clearly distanced itself from the socialist wing and has directly pointed to Morocco, with the collaboration of the United States and Israel, as provoking the massive crossing of the Ceuta border to bring down the government and has demanded the transfer to the Peninsula of the thousands of people, particularly minors, who are still in the autonomous city.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo has attacked Pedro Sánchez, who gave explanations this Thursday about his management of the Ceuta crisis. The leader of the PP has called for Sánchez’s resignation for being “complicit” or “incompetent” in the crossing of more than 70,000 people to Ceuta from Morocco and has warned: “He will pay for it in the courts and the polls.”

Pedro Sánchez appeared this Thursday before the plenary session of the Congress of Deputies to provide explanations about the management of the Ceuta crisis following the massive entry of 72,000 people from Morocco and a day after a police report emerged pointing to possible involvement of Moroccan agents in the development of the assault. Before a chamber awaiting the responsibilities of the neighboring country for the events that occurred on July 30 and 31 and the possible warnings received by the Government, the head of government defended that “it cannot be concluded” that the massive entry was “designed by Morocco,” although he admitted that it will be necessary to investigate whether there was “inaction or incapacity” on the part of the Moroccan authorities.
