OpenAI claims to have found a solution to one of the deepest problems in mathematics that has remained unsolved for 90 years. The company led by Sam Altman has announced that it shares “a solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the Millennium Prize Problems,” which represent some of the deepest questions at the forefront of mathematics.

The Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem raises the question of whether the smooth motion of a fluid in three dimensions can collapse. OpenAI claims that the proof, developed by an internal system of the company, shows that the dynamics of the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid motion can develop a singularity in finite time.
The announcement has been overshadowed by accusations from mathematician Tristan Buckmaster, who claims that OpenAI accelerated the resolution of the problem using AI agents after learning about his work and that of a colleague, Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge.

Meanwhile, researcher and mathematician Sebastien Bubeck, from OpenAI, stated in a press conference that the company began training a new AI model with advanced mathematical capabilities on August 28. This task began after rumors were published that Anthropic was making progress in solving the Navier-Stokes equations.
