More sports, fewer tablets: Moreno announces a plan against childhood sedentary lifestyle

The president of the Junta de Andalucía and PP-A candidate for re-election, Juanma Moreno, announced this Saturday that if he remains in office after the regional elections on May 17, he will launch the Plan Activa 365 against childhood sedentary behavior, which promotes physical activity among the youngest in contrast to the frequent use of tablets and other electronic devices currently.

This was announced by Juanma Moreno in a press conference, after touring the trail of phase 3 of the Green Belt of Córdoba, along with the mayor of the city, José María Bellido, and the PP’s lead candidate for the Parliament for Córdoba and campaign coordinator, Antonio Repullo.

On this second day of the electoral campaign, Juanma Moreno highlighted the green spaces that Andalusia has and the importance of having healthy habits and practicing physical activity to prevent diseases. He showed special concern for minors who make very continuous use of electronic devices, such as tablets, mobiles, or video game consoles.

Therefore, he committed to developing the plan against childhood sedentary behavior, since “one of the problems we are having in Western societies” is that minors “do little sport” and have little physical activity, because they focus more of their leisure time on digital and telematic activities due to the use of electronic devices.

“We are going to encourage children to have daily physical activity, with active recesses, where games are played and they can have fun,” explained the president, who also referred to the development of more “safe” paths for minors in municipalities and municipal programs for children’s sports.

At another point, he emphasized as a priority the fight against bullying and school harassment and raising awareness among minors of the harm it causes.

Measures to prevent climate impact

In environmental matters, Juanma Moreno also announced the approval of the plan Andalucía se adapta al Nuevo Clima, together with social and economic sectors, to anticipate risks such as droughts, floods, fires, or coastal damage, always based on science and knowledge.

He stressed that it is necessary to be “ahead when giving the best response to the climate risks we are experiencing as a consequence of climate change,” and recalled the train of storms that hit Andalusia in the first months of this year, causing major floods.

He recalled that the Junta has mobilized more than 2.6 billion euros in climate action since 2019: “Few communities in Spain and few regions in Europe have put so much money to preserve our natural spaces and to protect citizens from the impact of climate change.”
