Former minister Jaume Giró has definitively broken with Junts per Catalunya and has resigned as a member of the post-convergent party.

The resignation, communicated to the leadership of the organization, comes a year after he left his seat in the Parliament and stepped down from the leadership of Carles Puigdemont and Jordi Turull’s party due to strategic disagreements.
Despite this, in the past year, Giró has remained well connected with some local leaders in what was still his party and even considered for a few days running in the JxCat primaries for the city of Barcelona, although he ultimately declined to run to be the party’s mayoral candidate in the Catalan capital.
Giró, whose resignation was reported by Nació Digital, did not come from the now-defunct Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC), unlike most of Junts’ cadres. Nevertheless, he was classified in the party’s most pragmatic and pactist sector and defended that tradition. So much so that, as a minister, he openly defended the convergent legacy and the governments of Jordi Pujol. He was one of the first to do so.
He joined JxCat after being appointed Minister of Economy and Finance in 2021, in Pere Aragonès’ government, and campaigned not to break the coalition with Esquerra Republicana in October 2022. In the last two party congresses, held in Argelers and Calella, he was elected a member of the leadership.

In 2023, when Pedro Sánchez called the general elections by surprise, Giró raised his hand to lead the post-convergent group in Madrid, but Puigdemont cut his candidacy at the root and backed Miriam Nogueras, the current JxCat spokesperson in Congress, which led him to step back.
On some occasions, Giró had defended that his party reach agreements with the PSC or support the new financing model due to the extra injection of resources for Catalonia and given the difficulty of achieving an economic agreement, which is what his party advocates.
Trained as a journalist, Giró had been linked before his political stage to La Caixa and Gas Natural.
