The incident is part of a series of Iranian attacks against the Emirates, whose Ministry of Defense claims to have intercepted three cruise missiles “originating from Iran” over its territorial waters, in the first projectile shootdown operation since the ceasefire between the United States and Tehran came into effect almost a month ago.

“Four cruise missiles originating from Iran approaching the country were detected. Three were successfully intercepted over Emirati territorial waters, while the fourth fell into the sea,” the department said in a statement, confirming that the booms heard “were the result of the successful shootdowns.”

It also stated that “the UAE air defense system is actively combating missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats,” without providing further information.

This is the first time the Emirates has announced it is responding to an attack since the ceasefire between the United States and Iran took effect on April 8, a pact that ended Iranian retaliatory attacks for the war launched by Washington and Tel Aviv on February 28 against the Islamic Republic.

After the pact was implemented, several Persian Gulf countries have reported a few attack launches against their territories, although these have been attributed to pro-Iranian militias from Iraq and other armed groups allied with Tehran.
