Ukraine has intensified security measures in the border regions with Belarus amid fears of a possible new Russian offensive from the north of the country. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) confirmed this Thursday the deployment of reinforced controls, inspections, and special operations in the border areas, after weeks of warning that Moscow could use Belarusian territory as a platform for new attacks.

Ukrainian authorities recall that Belarus was already used by Russia as an entry point during the 2022 invasion, including the initial offensive towards Kyiv. The alert coincides with the joint nuclear maneuvers that Russia and Belarus are carrying out this week, with thousands of soldiers, aircraft, and strategic missile forces participating in the exercises. The Kremlin has denied the accusations and claims that Ukraine is trying to “fuel tension” in the region.
