Four out of ten Spaniards support the 'national priority' and see it as constitutional, according to the CIS

The principle of ‘national priority’, which means prioritizing Spaniards over immigrants in access to public services, and which has been incorporated into the government pacts of Vox and PP in Extremadura and Aragón, is supported by four out of ten respondents in the May barometer of the Center for Sociological Research (CIS), published this Friday.

44.6% of respondents who have heard about the mentioned agreements, which include ‘national priority’, agree or strongly agree that social policies should be inspired by this principle. 43.9% also consider it compatible with the Spanish Constitution, compared to 39.9% who think it is not.

The May CIS barometer, with fieldwork conducted through 4,016 interviews from May 4 to 18, prior to the judicial revelations about former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in the Plus Ultra case, also contains a projection of the results of a general election. The PSOE would be the winning party, with an estimated 36.2% of the vote—two tenths below a month ago—compared to a PP that, according to the CIS, would obtain 24.9%, which is 1.3 points more than in April.

Vox recovers after two months of decline and stands at 16.2% of the estimated vote

Better news comes from the poll for far-right parties. Vox would be in a position to regain support after two months of decline. In February, Vox had 18.9%, which fell to 16.6% in March and 14.7% in April, in the geopolitical context of Donald Trump’s war against Iran. Santiago Abascal’s party is recovering and now has an estimated vote of 16.2%, following the agreement signed in April with the PP in Aragón, which includes ‘national priority’, as in Extremadura and the Valencian Community. The ultra party led by Alvise Pérez, SALF, would also experience an increase of 0.7 percentage points, reaching 2.4%.

Among the remaining nationwide parties, both Sumar (5.7%) and Podemos (2.5%) maintain similar results in this poll compared to a month ago.

Among the non-statewide parties, two left-wing formations lead. ERC maintains the best result (2.6%), followed by EH Bildu (0.9%). In third place is Junts (0.8%), followed by BNG (0.7%) and a PNV at a low point (0.5%).

In a block of questions about the war in the Middle East, 63.3% of respondents say they are very or quite worried about the bombings by Israel and the United States in Iran. 54.7% are optimistic and see it possible to reach a solution to the current conflict in the area, although 64% believe the confrontation will last much longer.

The barometer also asks about the attacks by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, “who has disqualified the decisions of the Spanish Government and criticized the country’s situation,” statements that cause much or quite a lot of rejection in 65.4% of those interviewed.
