Jordi Oliveras, director of the Puig de les Basses prison (Figueres, Girona), has resigned from his position and the Department of Justice has announced that in the coming days it will appoint the person who will take over. Sources from the Department have said that the head of this penitentiary center offered his resignation to the Secretary of Penal Measures and Reintegration a few days ago, and now his resignation has been made effective.
According to La Vanguardia from penitentiary sources, behind this resignation is the number of inmate deaths by suicide that have occurred in Catalan prisons this 2026. Out of a total of five, three have taken place in Puig de les Basses, the last one on Monday. “Hence the director considered it honest to offer his position to the Secretary, and that this and the Department have seen the replacement as appropriate,” these sources indicate.

The last inmate who took his own life in Puig de les Basses did so last Monday, April 27. He was a 28-year-old man serving a three-year sentence for assaulting an authority figure. The man, who would have finished serving the sentence in January 2028, was located in the Special Closed Regime Department of the center, according to the Government.
The judicial authority opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the prisoner’s death, who did not have the suicide prevention protocol activated at the time of the events because no indicators justifying it had been detected, the same source indicated.
