ChatGPT will show ads next week in its free version

ChatGPT ads will arrive in Europe next week. Six months after testing them in the United States, free access to OpenAI’s popular chatbot will also have advertising. The company has announced that the ad-supported version will expand to 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria. The Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will continue to be ad-free.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT last February in the United States. Since then, it has been expanding the list of countries. The European Union, with the strictest legislation for digital services, has been the latest where the company has obtained authorization to insert advertising in responses to free queries. “Ads – the company states – contribute to our mission to democratize access to the best AI, as they allow free and low-cost access to ChatGPT.”

The company led by Sam Altman assures that “ads do not influence the responses ChatGPT offers” to its non-paying users. “When you see an ad – it points out – it will always be clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the organic response.” If there are several possible advertisers, the company will select the one it considers most relevant to the user based on the data it has from their query history.

OpenAI states that it will keep ChatGPT users’ conversations private from advertisers and will never sell their data. “Users also have control over ad personalization, and ad-free paid plans are available for those who prefer not to see ads,” it indicates.
