The world of acting is in mourning. Tim Curry, one of the most recognized British actors of the 80s and 90s, passed away this Tuesday at the age of 80. According to the American portal TMZ reported this Wednesday, the actor was found lifeless in his Los Angeles home, after having dealt for years with problems derived from a stroke in 2012. Since then, Curry had been using a wheelchair and had significantly restricted his public life.

After debuting in 1968 as an actor in the musical Hair in London, Curry began to gain notoriety in the 70s. The role that helped him stand out was that of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show, another musical work that would have a film adaptation in 1975. From 1982, he appeared in films such as Annie, Legend or Home Alone 2, before making the leap to television thanks to It, the 1990 ABC miniseries, where he was the first person to embody the clown Pennywise.
Curry’s double participation in the musical and the film of The Rocky Horror Show eventually turned it into a cult title. To this day, it continues to have limited screenings, mainly near Halloween, which makes it the film that has been in theaters the longest: 51 years. Frank-N-Furter’s own interpreter revealed how he stumbled upon the role in a 1992 interview, assuring that his choice came from a casual encounter.

“I had heard about the play because I lived on Paddington Street, near Baker Street, and there was an old gym a few numbers away. I ran into Richard O’Brien on the street and he told me he had just gone to that gym, to see if he could find a bodybuilder who could sing. I asked him: ‘What do you need him to sing for?’, and he told me that he was going to go ahead with his musical and that I should talk to Jim Sharman. He gave me the script and I thought: ‘If this goes well, it’s going to be a huge hit’,” he expressed.
An unforgettable voice
On the small screen, the Briton also gained notoriety as the voice of Nigel Thornberry, one of the main protagonists of the Nickelodeon animated series The Wild Thornberrys. He has also held occasional roles in a wide range of animated projects since the 2000s: Gargoyles, Casper, Carmen Sandiego, the first version of Voltron, Samurai Jack, Johnny Bravo, Phineas and Ferb or Ben 10.
