At least two people have died and four are missing this Tuesday in a fire declared at a construction site in Brussels (Belgium). This has been confirmed by the Labor Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating the case. It is believed that the missing may be in an elevator of the building, which firefighters are trying to access.

A spokesperson for the local labor inspection explained that an unspecified number of bodies have been found in one of the two elevators of the large rehabilitation project located in the central De Brouckère square, where the fire was declared early Tuesday. According to Le Soir, the fire broke out shortly before 8:00 a.m. in the Oxy building, where renovation works are being carried out.
Brecht Speybrouck, spokesperson for the Brussels Labor Prosecutor’s Office, also cited by Le Soir said he did not know “exactly how many people are [in the damaged elevator]. It could be the six missing people, but there could also be more in the other elevator or elsewhere.”

Firefighters indicated that at the time the fire started there were more than 200 workers on the site
The construction workers who were evacuated were taken to the BruCity employee restaurant thanks to the intervention of the mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, according to the spokesperson for the fire department, Walter Derieuw. “The Red Cross is providing them with psychological support. In addition to the internal emergency plan, a medical intervention plan and a psychosocial plan have also been implemented,” he added, in statements to the public television RTBF.
Firefighters indicated that at the time the fire started there were more than 200 workers on the site and that three people were taken to the hospital: two people with burns and a firefighter with hyperthermia who had to be treated on site.
