Ukrainian drones attacked both civilian and industrial facilities in the Russian republic of Tatarstan on the night of this Monday, according to local authorities. As a result of this latest offensive, at least 13 people died, while nearly 40 were injured.

“There is a massive incursion in the city of Nizhnekamsk.” The attack is carried out against both industrial and civilian facilities. Unfortunately, there have been deaths,” wrote the regional government press service on its Telegram account. Later, the head of the region, Rustam Minnikhanov, announced that the number of deaths had risen to at least 13. The recorded injured are 39.
Kyiv continues targeting refineries on Russian territory
In Nizhnekamsk, an industrial city of 240,000 inhabitants and 1,600 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border, there is an important refinery, TANECO, of the oil company Tatneft. Russian authorities have not indicated whether it was affected by the attack, but several independent Russian media claim it was hit. And several videos on social media show smoke rising from an area that could be on the territory of its facilities.
This refinery, which was already attacked in early June, processed 17 million tons of oil in 2024. That same year it produced 2.7 million tons of gasoline and 8.5 million tons of diesel.
One of Kyiv’s declared objectives of its drone attacks is to damage oil infrastructure on Russian territory to deprive it of the profits obtained from the export of crude oil and derived products. These profits serve Russia to finance its military campaign in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukrainian attacks have caused a severe fuel shortage crisis in dozens of regions of Russia. Moscow assures that the situation has been stabilizing and that most of these problems are already resolved.
Official mourning for the victims
Radmir Belyayev, mayor of Nizhnekamsk, said that federal authorities have sent additional medical teams to the city to deal with the consequences of the attack. “The Russian Minister of Health, Mikhail Murashko, has taken personal control of healthcare for the victims (…) This is a great pain for all of us,” added Belyayev.
Minnikhanov declared a day of mourning for the deceased in Nizhnekamsk, the third largest city in the region after the capital Kazan and Naberezhnye Chelny.
In total, in the early hours of August 9 to 10, Russian air defense systems destroyed 456 drones over 17 regions, including the annexed Crimean peninsula, the border regions of Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, and Rostov, as well as Moscow Province.
