In broad daylight and in full view of everyone in a busy square in Figueres, a man stabbed his ex-partner to death this Tuesday. The victim, a 33-year-old transgender woman of Honduran origin, received several stab wounds to the chest, arms, and neck, injuries that proved fatal. The attacker, 48 years old and of Spanish nationality, had a restraining order against the victim but had violated it twice in the last few hours.
The last violation was this Monday when he was arrested for assaulting her. Hours earlier, according to the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC), a fast trial was held for a previous episode of abuse, and the perpetrator accepted a six-month prison sentence and a restraining order of 250 meters and no contact with the victim for one year and four months. But that same day he was arrested again for alleged injuries to the ex-partner, who was summoned for a forensic examination this Tuesday but did not appear. The attacker was eventually released.

The Mossos d’Esquadra and the Figueres Urban Guard arrested him after the crime. Several neighbors passing through Josep Tarradellas square who witnessed the events confronted him, and despite his resistance, they managed to subdue him.
The man, a resident of Figueres, lived on Sant Roc street, just a few meters from the square where he allegedly committed the crime. Some witnesses say they saw him “looking calm” ten minutes earlier entering a nearby gas station. Upon leaving the store, he reportedly went home to get a kitchen knife, with which he dealt the fatal stab wounds.
The weapon was found this Tuesday under one of the vehicles parked in the square, where the forensic police remained for several hours searching for evidence. The Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of the Mossos d’Esquadra has opened an investigation to clarify the causes of the fatal assault. The case is under secrecy of proceedings.
In the videos circulating on social media about this incident, the enormous coldness with which the attacker acted stands out, a man with a police record. Right after the crime, the detainee calmly went to a fountain to wash his arms, which were completely bloodied.

The mayor of Figueres, Jordi Masquef, in statements to the media, acknowledged that “something had failed” considering that the police had recently arrested the attacker for violating a restraining order. The mayor called to end “this scourge” and has called for a minute of silence today.
After proceeding with the lifting of the body, the investigating judge of the Figueres court has recused himself from the case in favor of the court for violence against women. So far in 2026, there have already been 19 fatal victims of gender-based violence in Spain, 1,360 since 2003, according to the Government Delegation for Gender Violence, which continues to collect data on two other cases besides this one in Figueres.
One occurred on May 16 in Alicante and another yesterday Monday in Navarra. If all are confirmed, the total number of fatal victims would rise to 22.
