For many years it had become a recurring joke to criticize young people who were growing up and still living in their parents’ house. The jokes turned into grimaces upon realizing that if they did not emancipate from the family home, it was not out of whim, but because of the difficulties in accessing decent housing. Years go by, and the only significant change that has happened is that today society is already aware that we are facing a serious problem. Now it must be solved.

We could wallpaper the walls of our newsroom with the news we have published about government plans, autonomous entities, or many municipalities with initiatives to address the problem, but this issue is becoming a general failure of all political parties. We must not diminish the effort made by the Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, who has achieved the milestone of agreeing on the 2026-2030 state plan with all the communities. Here, polarization was set aside, and socialists and conservatives unanimously approved distribution criteria
of 7 billion euros to transfer to the autonomous communities and protect subsidized housing to prevent it from being disqualified.
In Catalonia, Salvador Illa has announced a plan to build 210,000 new homes by 2030, which would be a significant leap, but it seems insufficient given the existing demand and the constant increase in the immigrant population. This week we learned how donations have soared to historic highs in Catalonia as a way to help relatives access their own home. And the Government has raised the youth category from 35 to 40 years so they can access loans to acquire their first home. And if we go down to a more local scale, it is shameful to see how the real estate market is stalled in Barcelona because the PSC does not have a majority to eliminate the measure that requires new constructions to reserve 30% of their developments for affordable housing.

This structural problem can only be solved with a great social pact between parties, associations, and the real estate sector. An entire generation cannot be condemned to not having their own home.
