The machine is submerged inside the vertical tunnel that was being excavated to carry out the track undergrounding works, which are also being done from the ends. Everything collapsed when one of the shaft walls partially gave way, according to sources from the Railway Infrastructure Administrator (Adif).

The incident occurred at the height of the Vallbona neighborhood, precisely where the municipal boundary of Barcelona ends and that of Montcada i Reixac begins, next to the Besòs river and the Rec Comtal. Firefighters are reviewing the surroundings of the affected area, and infrastructure technicians have intensified the monitoring of nearby buildings.
